Versatile is a Canadian brand of agricultural machinery that produces augers, rollers and combines. In the 1970s, it was an independent company founded by Peter Pakosch and Roy Robinson, which occupied 70% of the 4WD market and then belonged to Ford and Fiat 's New Holland, which was allocated after Case-International merged with New Holland to form CNH Global.

Versatile was the first company to begin mass production of articulated all-wheel drive tractors, starting in 1966 with all-wheel drive D100 and G100. These innovative tractors were primitive by modern standards with a 6-cylinder diesel or 8-cylinder gas engine rated at 100 horsepower. 1966 models sold for less than $ 10,000.

Brief characteristics of tractors Versatile R2, R3.

Versatile R2, R3 are all-wheel drive universal row-crop tractors with a classic frame, designed to perform any field work, as well as general farm work. Tractors are traditionally equipped with Cummins engines. This series uses quiet engines with electronic control and common rail system with central fuel injection. A feature of the engines is compliance with Stage IIIA (Tier 3) requirements without the use of special exhaust emission reduction systems. Basic specifications are shown in table 1.

Table 1. Technical characteristics of tractors Versatile R2, R3

Sealed noise and dust-proof double cabins with panoramic windows with an area of 6.83 m2 are installed on the machines, providing a 360-degree view. The operator's seat on a semi-automatic air suspension has 11 adjustments, the steering column has height and tilt adjustments, which together provide ergonomics for a machine operator of any build and height.

The control panel is built into the right armrest of the operator's seat and moves with it. Operation is via a joystick, keys and a 7" and 12" color monitor for the (R2) 320 and (R3) 340 models respectively. The control system provides for the simplification of most work operations through the implementation of simple algorithms. In addition, the basic version is pre-installed with the Auto Steer Ready system, which allows you to install an automatic driving system of any production with minimal costs.

As standard, the tractors are supplied with single front tires 600 mm wide and twin rear tires 710 mm wide. It is possible to equip the tractor with narrow twin wheels with a tread width of 320, 380, 480, 520 mm in front and behind for working on row crops.

Reasons for Versatile 320/340 Tractor Benefits

At first glance, the intention is not to expand the range of equipment, but to narrow it down, and “from below” may seem insufficiently thought out.

However, agricultural producers today approach the selection of equipment carefully in terms of capabilities (productivity, aggregation), resource saving (efficiency, cost of ownership) and purchase price. Thus, according to the forecasts of the Analytical Center, in the next decade, farmers will give preference to tractors with a capacity of more than 200 hp. with., while the demand for machines of medium power will continue to fall. Dealers of manufacturing companies specify that the greatest increase in demand is in the range of tractors with a classic frame with a capacity of 300 to 370 hp. With. The second "peak" of demand is articulated vehicles with a capacity of 430 ... 570 liters. With. Thus, the Versatile R2 and R3 tractors fit into the most important sector, and with articulated power tractors

During the operation of low-power wheeled (without twin) tractors, aggregated with implements of small working width, the overconsolidation zones are concentrated and spread in both directions from the track at a distance of 0.8−1 m [3], thus, they occupy up to 50–60% from the entire area of processing. By increasing the power of the tractor within reasonable limits, this area can be significantly reduced.

For example, when aggregating with a reversible plow, about 40 liters are required. With. per body, that is, a 200 hp tractor. With. able to work with a 5-furrow plow with a working width of about 2 m. Versatile 320/340 l. With. aggregated with 8-furrow plows with a working width of about 3.2-3.6 m. Moreover, according to practical data, with such tools it works effectively even on waterlogged soil and shows 20-30% higher productivity compared to classmates .

This was achieved, among other things, due to the optimal ratio of the machine's power to its weight. For example, according to the calculations of the specialists of the Azovo-Chernomorsky State Agroengineering Academy [4], which correlate with practical data, under the conditions of working on stubble on dry soils for wheeled all-wheel drive tractors, the energy saturation index should be in the range of 11.11-17.5 W/kg at working speed 7-12 km/h.

The energy saturation index of R2 320 and R3 340 at the maximum permissible weight and speed of 12 km/h is 15.9 and 16.95 W/kg. For comparison, for tractors of one of the most popular brands with similar power characteristics (321 and 383 hp), the energy saturation indicator at the declared permissible weight and speed of 12 km/h will be 13.1 and 15.65 W/kg.

Another important point that makes the purchase of Versatile 320/340 tractors profitable is the ability to aggregate machines with equipment of any type.

In the basic configuration, tractors are equipped with a drawbar, three-point hitch, PTO. This is a weighty argument for farms, in which, as a rule, the equipment fleet is represented by trailed, semi-mounted, and mounted implements.
