John Deere Engines with TIER 2 Technology

Not infrequently, in the midst of field work, it happens that the tractor is sharply lacking traction - the engine jams. Or the combine suddenly stops in the middle of a field because the engine has stalled. Who is not familiar with this situation? This is due to poor quality diesel.

When the reason for the frequent shutdown of engines was found - bad diesel fuel, in many countries standards for fuel quality were tightened. In turn, this led to constructive changes in engine building, which also affected the production of John Deere equipment.

With this in mind, John Deere designs engines specifically for each market, and John Deere dealers around the world know how to properly service and repair them.

TIER2 vs TIER4. All engines have a special filter-separator that removes water in the fuel, which is a real poison for the fuel injection system. But for TIER 4 engines, not only water is a problem, but also the high sulfur content. And, unfortunately, it cannot be filtered: there are hundreds of times more sulfur compounds in domestic fuel than, for example, in diesel engines of the EU countries.

Marketed John Deere products are equipped with a fixed geometry turbocharger. At the same time, TIER 4 engines use a variable geometry turbocharger to operate efficiently and meet stringent emissions regulations. It is this geometry control mechanism that is susceptible to failure due to the use of fuels with a high sulfur content. So such a turbocharger will not be useful, and will not be able to provide additional power.

Other elements of TIER 4 technology are exhaust gas recirculation, diesel particulate filter, diesel oxidation catalyst, urea injection systems. This sophisticated technology is used to reduce the environmental impact of machinery and is very sensitive to low quality diesel fuel.

By the way, an interesting fact: an engine complying with TIER2 standards, compared to high-tech engines, consumes less diesel fuel and thus can be fully optimized for lower fuel consumption rates.

TIER4 on a bad diesel. What happens if ordinary domestic fuel is poured into the engine according to TIER 4 standards? All kinds of sulfur compounds, of which there are many times more than in western fuel, will immediately clog the particulate filter. And replacing it will be expensive - about 2,500 euros, and the machine will not want to work without it. The fact is that, according to EU legislation, the engine must be designed in such a way that after dismantling the filter or other unit, it will be capable of only minimum power - so that it will be enough to get to the nearest service center.

But that's not all: the turbocharger and the EGR valve, together with the fuel injectors, also deteriorate. Replacing these components will also cost a pretty penny: you will have to spend about 1200 euros for just one injector.
