The tractor business was in a joint project with Harry Ferguson in 1936. who built FergusonBrown. Brown becameone of the largest British machinery manufacturers inthe post-war period with a factory in Meltham, England.

FergusonBrown had many features, including the use of cast alloy for many components, which was lightweight but also easily damaged. FergusonBrown used the C.Climax engine for the first 3 50 tractors. Brown developed hisown engine, which was later installed for production. Production was 1350, in 19 40 after production was completed.

Brown and Ferguson disagreed over parts of the tractor in the late 1930s, and David Brown developed his own version, the BAK1, that no one knew about. And presentedhis version at the Royal Exhibition of 1939. Ferguson, aftersplitting from Brown, joined Henry Ford in 1938 to allow his "Ferguson System" three-point linkage tobe used on Fordson N tractors. This agreement was terminatedby Ford'sgrandson in 1947 andFerguson split again to form it in 1948.

The last DavidBrown tractors were produced in 1983, In 1972, the tractor enterprises were bought by Case IH

In September 2008, itwas announced that David Brown Gear systems and related companies, David Brown Hydraulics based in Poole, Dorset, Maag Pumps in Switzerland and Union Pumps in the US, would be sold to Clyde Blowers of Scotland - owned by entrepreneur Jim McCall - indeal worth £368 million

in 2016 David Brown was merged with Santasalo toform David Brown Santasalo. The joint company remains in the hands of Clyde Blowers Capital
