Toro (company)

In 1970, Toro chairman David Lilly and president Al Conover identified the need for Toro to become a manufacturer of complete lines of lawns and gardens. To do this, they realized the need to offer a serious two-stage snowplow line. However, people who have previously tried to achieve this with less than stellar results stated: "We are mowers and we do not belong to the snow."

However, Conover and Lilly appointed a pair of newly hired engineers to lead a team to research alternatives for a potential new line of snowplows. Then one of them led the development of the entire product line, resulting in a 3-unit line that received the highest rating in Consumer Reports in its second year of existence. Thus, Toro began its long-term dominance in the snow industry. Later, the unusual snowplow concept, prototyped and demonstrated in the same research program, was further developed to become Toro's "power curve". The same two people created a number of other original Toro concepts, including Toro's "kicker" based mulching mower system, ride-on mower bag system, yard lighting, "virtual pivot" mower attachment system, leaf vacuum/blower system, and row other concepts designed to facilitate Toro's campaign to turn the company into a complete line of lawns and gardens. In later years, as independent consultants, these same people went on to create and develop these many new patentable concepts for Toro, as well as for a host of other Minnesota companies.

Thanks to the excellent work and continued improvement of Toro's product development engineering staff, as well as very competent marketing efforts and solutions, Toro has established itself as a true leader in the outdoor products market.
