Ferdinand Porsche dreamed of producing tractors back in the thirties, when he was creating the "people's car" - the future Volkswagen Kaefer. The tractor, according to his plan, was also supposed to become "people's", but, despite the proximity to the ruling circles of Germany, it was not possible to realize this dream at that time. It may be that those years were too prosperous for the “people's tractor”, which is why it went unnoticed, but in difficult times the need for it appeared.

Porsche remembered the tractor in the late forties, when Germany was recovering from the defeat in World War II. At the same time, mass production of beetles began in the country, and then various microcars such as Isetta or Messerschmitt - vehicle buyers did not have much money in those years and saved on everything. Even the first sports car Porsche-356, which appeared in 1948, was made on the basis of the Beetle. And now the time has come for "people's tractors".

For their production in 1950, a separate enterprise, Porsche-Diesel Motorenbau GmbH, was established, stationed in the town of Manzel on the shores of Lake Constance. This also turned out to be symbolic: the Bodensee also remembered the best times when giant zeppelins slowly floated over its water surface - the real pride of Germany, the most expensive German Maybach cars were also slowly assembled in neighboring Friedrichshafen. And now it's time for the production of tractors.

Porsche-Diesel tractors - this is how their brand sounds, so as not to be confused with cars - were produced until 1963. The new products turned out to be more massive and in demand than sports cars - in total, more than 120 thousand tractors were manufactured during this time, while the Porsche-356 from 1948 to 1965 made 76 thousand. Even the model range of tractors was much wider: with one, two, three and four cylinders, various models and modifications - more than thirty in all during the entire production period. In comparison, the Porsche 356 was produced only in coupe and roadster versions, and modifications appeared sequentially and only with significant improvements to the base model. And in only one consumer aspect, tractors lost to Porsche cars - they were all painted only in red, leaving no choice to buyers. When the production of Porsche-Diesel tractors ceased, Daimler-Benz acquired the workshops on the shores of Lake Constance to produce powerful diesel engines of the MB 833, 837 and 838 series.
