The New Holland brand originates in 1895, when Abram Zimmerman opened a forge in Pennsylvania, USA, in the city of New Holland. In order to expand his business, he began selling stationary electric motors for agricultural machines, such as feed presses. Its customers often found the mechanisms freezing during harsh winters. Therefore, he developed his own design of frost-resistant engines. Despite changes in ownership and management, the New Holland Machine Company grew and developed a large number of successful agricultural machines, notably the first automatic knitting baler. In 1947, New Holland was bought by the Sperry Rand Corporation.
At the same time, in 1906, Belgian engineer Léon Kleiss set up a thresher business in Zedelgem, building machines for separating grain from pre-threshed crops. His firm went on to develop Europe's first self-propelled combine harvester, a machine with its own engine that combined cutting and threshing processes. In 1964, the Sperry Rand Corporation acquired Clayson's company and renamed its products in the English manner Clayson.
Automotive innovator Henry Ford created the first Fordson tractor, the Model F, in the United States in 1917. His firm continued to develop such well-known tractor brands as Dexta and Major, and factories, including in Basildon, near London.
Just one year later, in 1918, Fiat demonstrated its first tractor powered by a 20 horsepower 702 internal combustion engine. Fiat (Fabbrica Italiana di Automobili Torino) was founded in Turin, Italy in 1899 by a group of engineers and investors, including Giovanni Agnelli. At first, it created cars, but soon the company expanded its range to heavier machines such as trucks, buses, and tractors. Fiat later created the Fiat Trattori agricultural division, which became Fiatagri in 1974 after expanding into other areas of agricultural engineering. At the same time, Fiat created a joint engineering venture, FiatAllis. The commercial divisions of Fiatagri and FiatAllis later merged to form Fiat Geotech.
In 1986, Sperry Corporation's decision to exit the farm equipment business led Ford, which until then had made only tractors of all farm equipment, to buy New Holland and provide it with a complete line of grain harvesting equipment. It retained the Ford name and blue color for tractors, and the signature yellow and red color and New Holland name for grain harvesting equipment under a new commercial unit, Ford New Holland, operating as part of Ford's parent company.
In 1990, Ford decided to sell its agricultural and construction equipment divisions, and in 1991 reached an agreement with the Fiat group to sell the Ford New Holland to Fiat Geotech. The merger created a new division, N.H. Geotech, and it was decided to merge Ford, Fiat and other businesses under the neutral, world-famous New Holland brand, phasing out the previous Ford and Fiatagri names but retaining the familiar Fiatagri leaf logo.
Today, as part of the CNH Industrial group, New Holland maintains a leading position in the production of agricultural equipment, advanced development of tractors, grain harvesters, material handling equipment and other machines. In addition to other factories in the city of New Holland, production is still ongoing. The company also understands that farmers and agricultural equipment manufacturers are fighting climate change, which is why New Holland is a leader in the development of clean energy, developing a prototype hydrogen and methane engine for tractors and actively participating in the creation of an autonomous energy-free farm.
