Tractors. History, people, cars - Fordson
As early as 1916, managers responsible for international operations reported to Ford that they saw the European market as the fastest growing and that in the long run, by building plants here, production and sales could be achieved, as in America. The key to optimism was the actual delivery of Ford Model T to Europe - against the background of the protracted war, American cheap and unpretentious cars were very useful, because previously popular German cars became inaccessible, and the Allies themselves needed modern technology. In 1919 alone, Ford signed a small contract to supply 400 cars - in two years of that contract, only 238 cars could be delivered, and Ford misses $ 4851.11 - the first loss on the great path of cooperation with Europe.
in mid-1924 he still received a loan of $ 2.5 million. The fact that the money was almost entirely spent on the purchase of Ford tractors, spare parts and components, shows the undoubted help of Henry Ford in obtaining this loan from the Soviet trade mission. The volume of purchases of equipment from Ford looked like this:
1922 - 268 tractors, 261 cars and 56 trucks;
1923 - 402 tractors, 30 cars and 192 trucks;
1924 - 3108 tractors, 61 cars and 154 trucks;
1925 - 10,515 tractors, 162 cars and 463 trucks;
The shortage of spare parts due to the relocation of Fordson's plant in Ireland and - at the same time - the readiness of International Harvester to fill the gaps, played against Henry Ford in choosing a contractor to build a tractor plant. But this was only a formal reason: at the same time, the plant was already in full swing producing Fordson tractors - the delegation reported in 1926, and in 1929 visited Charles Sorensen - the right hand of Henry Ford. Against the background of prospects to participate in the construction of a new tractor plant, Sorensen not only did not complain to the Soviet side, but also sent a tractor engineer for advice and technical assistance. In common sense, the Bolsheviks-businessmen will not refuse - why pay Ford for documentation and technical specialists, if more or less his tractor has long been mastered in mass production? However, an agreement was soon signed with Ford to build a joint venture to produce the A and AA models.
Contrary to popular belief, Fordson itself was not very suitable for use in difficult conditions. Even according to reports from Ford, the tractor in many cases could not fully perform its role due to too light weight. Fordson weighed half as much as most tractors of competing companies of the time, not inferior in power. The tractor suffered from a tendency to overturn - when towing heavy loads or plowing hard ground, Fordson rose to its feet. During one of the tests, while plowing solid ground, Ford testers were forced to put the heaviest of the engineers on the "nose" of the tractor to keep the front of the tractor on the ground. Despite the excess power for this weight, the tractor often did not allow to plow the soil to the required depth. Due to these shortcomings of Ford tractors, in many regions the heavier International Harvester was preferred.
