Allison Transmission introduced a new 9-speed gearbox

Allison Transmission at the International Commercial Vehicle Fair IAA introduced a new 9-speed gearbox and announced the expansion of its electric drive solution portfolio. In addition, the company continues to develop and maintain ongoing network solutions for integrated and efficient fleet management in remote mode.

 

  September 20, 2018. Allison Transmission has announced that its 9-speed automatic transmission for medium commercial vehicles will be available worldwide. The second news was the development of a hybrid drive with an increased power reserve on a pure electrical load. Both announcements were made as part of the 67th International Exhibition of Commercial Vehicles IAA.

Showcasing the benefits of Allison KP

The advantages of the Allison automatic gearbox with Continuous Power Technology (switching without interrupting the power flow) over a robotic gearbox of another manufacturer were demonstrated to us in practice. Two identical Scania G490 trucks, one equipped with an Allison automatic transmission and the other with an Opticruise robotic manual gearbox, began to accelerate simultaneously. The truck with the Allison automatic transmission immediately noticeably went ahead compared to the second, demonstrating higher dynamics.

The graphs (pdf pages 2 and 7) show how the Allison automatic transmission uses a torque converter to deliver continuous power when changing gears and to accelerate the truck more dynamically. This allows for faster trips, i.e. increased productivity of the truck. When using robotic gearboxes (AMT), with each gear change, there is a loss of power and torque, such changes during a working day can be up to 1500 on average, which reduces the overall efficiency of the equipment. Robotic boxes use a mechanical clutch that wears out over time and needs to be replaced. It is claimed that with Allison automatic transmissions, productivity can be increased by up to 20% compared to robotic ones.

 

Meeting with the racing team of Gerard de Roy

The organizers of the Construction Equipment Week prepared a great surprise for the guests - an acquaintance with the famous racer, two-time winner of the Dakar Rally Gerard de Roy and members of his team. The racers did not come to Szentgotthard by accident. Automatic transmissions are gaining popularity among all Dakar racers. De Rooy's team started using the Allison automatic transmission in 2016 after a series of problems with other transmissions.

 

During a race, the truck's engine runs at full power 65 to 80% of the time. You can imagine the tough conditions in which the Allison automatic transmission has to work. The riders told reporters how, as a result of using the Allison 4000 series transmission and upgrading the suspension and chassis, they managed to change the weight distribution along the truck axles and reduce the force of shocks transmitted from the wheels to the driver's spine by 30%, for example, from 500 to 345 kg. By using a retarder in the Allison gearbox, it is possible to reduce the use of the wheel brakes and thus heat up the tires during the race, thus extending the tire life.

 

After this story, everyone could ride a racing car with Gerard de Roy, who turned out to be a simple modest guy despite all his "star" titles and awards.

In addition to the racing team, the de Rooy family owns the De Rooy Transport transport company, which transports agricultural and other heavy equipment throughout Europe and occupies one of the leading positions in this market. The company owns 450 road trains and more than 15 terminals throughout Europe. Many innovations developed for racing cars are subsequently incorporated into the design of De Rooy transport tractors, including the Allison automatic transmission.
